Inquiry is THE most vital skill of any leader. Inquiry is the art of asking great questions. It’s funny that we often talk about how vital listening skills are, however if you don’t ask great question there is nothing to listen to!
Powerful inquiry combined with powerful listening enables you to genuinely sense what another person wants and needs. Inquiry invites the other person to a place of greater depth of understanding about themselves and what is true for them. In the listening, you create the space for them to explore their obstacles and needs.
As a leader, one of your roles is to be a great coach. One of the key tools any great workplace coach uses is questions. There is a formula I’ve created to facilitate you to get to the heart of an issue with what I call “Three Is of Exploration.”

Shockingly, only 15% is due to technical knowledge. Take the opportunity to utilize the format of the “3 I’s of Exploration” in your next coaching conversation.
